Trees are a beautiful part of any property, but they can also become serious hazards when they're diseased, damaged, or structurally compromised. At Timberline Expert Tree Service, we've been assessing trees for over 30 years, and we've seen every type of tree problem imaginable. Here are the five signs you should never ignore.
1. Large Dead Branches (Widow Makers) Dead branches — especially large ones near the top of the tree — are called "widow makers" for a reason. They can fall without warning, causing serious injury or property damage. If you notice significant dead wood in the canopy, it's time to call a professional.
2. Leaning or Shifting A tree that has suddenly started leaning, or one that has shifted from its original position, may have root damage or structural failure. This is especially concerning after heavy rain or wind storms when the soil is saturated.
3. Fungal Growth at the Base Mushrooms or bracket fungi growing at the base of a tree or on its trunk are a sign of internal decay. The fungus feeds on the dead wood inside, which can hollow out the tree and make it extremely unstable.
4. Cracks or Splits in the Trunk Deep cracks or splits in the main trunk are a serious structural concern. These can indicate that the tree is under stress or has been damaged by lightning, disease, or improper pruning in the past.
5. Root Damage or Exposed Roots Construction work, soil compaction, or erosion can damage a tree's root system. Signs include heaving soil around the base, visible root damage, or a tree that seems to be "lifting" on one side.
